The town of Alta, Utah is 8,950 feet above sea level, easily making it one of the highest elevation towns in the United States.
Alta, Utah is also host to 500,000 visitors a year to its world-renowned ski resort, famous for its deep powder snow and restriction of snow boarding. Alta began as a mining town in 1865, home to silver miners working various locations in Little Cottonwood Canyon. It became home to the Alta ski resort in 1938, when it opened its first chair lift.
Due to its proximity to the Great Salt and because of its high elevation, Alta gets around 500 inches of snow each year.
